A letter dated 4 February 1834, to Alabama Governor John Gayle, thanking him for a nice visit to Tuscaloosa, probably during Key's mission to resolve a dispute between the U.S. government and Alabama over the disposition of lands taken from the Creek Indians. Key's letter also discusses congressional debates on the Bank of the United States.

Biographical / Historical

Key (1779-1843) is remembered chiefly for composing the words to the "Star-Spangled Banner" during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, but he was also a successful attorney, and in 1833 negotiated a settlement between the federal government and the State of Alabama over the fate of former Creek Indian lands
