Biographical/Historical note

Amos Kendall was born on August 16, 1789 in Massachusetts. He later served as the United States Postmaster General under presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. In 1857, Kendall’s philanthropy founded the institution that would become Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University) for the deaf. Prior to becoming Postmaster General he tutored Henry Clay’s children.
