Biographical / Historical
Leo Seltzer was credited as the creator of the roller derby sport. He was the founder and the head of the original Roller Derby league from 1935 until 1958 when his son took over the business. After realizing popularity of dance marathons in 1929, Seltzer sought ways to capitalize on the trend. Leo helped organize and promote walkathons in 1931. It was another name for dance marathons, since participants would end up shuffling around the room during the contest. Some of the dances would last longer than 30 days. First walkathon was held in Denver, Colorado. Total o twenty-three walkathons were held. Two of walkathons were held in Louisville, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana depicted in this collection.
