Biographical / Historical
Joinville (1818-1900) was the third son of French King Louis Philippe (reigned 1830-48) and his wife Marie Amalie. He married Princess Francisca of Brazil, and they had three children: Francoise, Duchess of Chartres; Pierre, Duke of Penthievre; and Marie Leopoldine. He was an Admiral in the French Navy in Algeria but was exiled to England after the Revolution. After the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870, he was elected to a seat in the National Assembly where he served until 1876. In 1886, the new law against pretenders to the throne deprived him of his rank as Vice-Admiral, but he remained in Paris until his death in 1900.
