Biographical / Historical
Goldsmith W. Hewitt was born on February 14, 1834 near Elyton (now Birmingham), Jefferson County, Alabama. After completing his academic curriculum, he began preparing for the bar and was admitted to practice in 1856. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted as private in the 10th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He was promoted to captain, 28th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, in 1862. He was seriously wounded at Chickamauga in September 1863 and invalided out. He returned to his practice in Birmingham and was elected to the Alabama state senate in 1870 and 1871. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1875 to 1879 and again from 1881 to 1885. He then served another term in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1886 through 1888. He died in Birmingham on May 27, 1895.
