Biographical / Historical
Richard Norfleet Harris, son of R. N. and Amanda Banks Harris, was born on 15 September 1844 at Rosedale, near Laneville, Hale County, Alabama. He was a junior at the University of Alabama when the Civil War began. He served as drillmaster for the 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, then stationed in Auburn, Alabama. By the end of the war, he was a first lieutenant.
Harris returned to the family plantation and on 30 June 1869, he married Sallie Melville Minge, of Norwood, Marengo County, Alabama. The couple had two children: (1) Lucy Melville; and (2) Richard N. Jr.
He died on 27 September 1910 at Rosedale.
