Biographical / Historical

Joseph Poleman Harkins was born in Harleigh, Pennsylvania, on 20 February 1915. He graduated from the Mining and Mechanical Institute in Freeland, Pennsylvania, and the University of Alabama, where he received a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Corps of Engineers Reserve in 1938. According to a hand-written note on the Tri-Supply article, he retired from the U.S. Air Force on 19 February 1975 and died in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, in 26 September 1977.
