Scope and Contents note
The collection of Judge Wiley Coleman contains three items: two Judge Coleman’s docket books from the period he spent on the Alabama Circuit Court (17th Circuit) and one ledger from his law practice in Eutaw. The ledger book is from Wiley’s law practice. It is a bound volume covering the years 1859 through 1866. There are two docket books in this collection. The first book is from the Circuit Court. It is a bound volume for the Spring Term of 1863, and the November Term of 1871. The second book is from the Circuit Court during the Spring Term of 1867. Both of these books are bound and indexed.

Biographical Sketch
Wiley Coleman was a lawyer and judge in Eutaw, Alabama. He was born February 11, 1819 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina and died May 22, 1892 in Eutaw. Judge Coleman attended school in Eutaw and was a student at the University of Alabama. After receiving his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1842, he began practicing law in Eutaw where he also maintained large planting interests. In 1846 he was elected judge of the county court of Greene County. Coleman represented Greene County in the state legislature for two terms during the Civil War, was a member of the state constitutional convention in 1875, and served a s a private in the Mexican War.
