From the Collection: This collection consists of a miscellany of materials related to the Bogy and Smith families. The former were French immigrants of the early nineteenth century who appear to have settled, variously, in the "Vine and Olive Colony" of Alabama (Demopolis), around Arkansas Post, and around New Madrid, Missouri. The collection contains a short typescript record of the Civil War service of Joseph Vestal Bogy, of Arkansas, who served in the Confederate Army, a modern copy of a photo of J. V. Bogy in a Confederate Army uniform, and correspondence between Louis T. Bogy and Kent Gardien, of Cuernavaca, Mexico, concerning their mutual forebears, Ignace and Desiree Bogy, the parents of J. V. Bogy. The collection also contains information and correspondence relative to the families of Steven and Mary Jane Pitt Smith of Green and Choctaw Counties, Alabama, and Ivy Furman Smith and Mary Jane Morrison Smith of Green and Marengo Counties, Alabama. A daughter of the latter couple, Ruthanna Victoria Smith, met and later married J. V. Bogy when he was being held at a parole camp near Demopolis, having been captured at Vicksburg and subsequently paroled. There are also photocopies and typed transcripts of a few letters from somebody who signed him or herself [N.P.T.] to Ruthanna Victoria Smith, from Ft. Morgan, Alabama (1861) and Meridian, Mississippi (1862), another to R. V. Smith from her cousin Etta Smith from Livingston, Alabama (1861), copies of correspondence between Louis T. Bogy and Kent Gardien (1978), a typescript paper by the latter about early 19th century French settlers in the U.S. entitled "The Splendid Fools," a letter from Louis T. Bogy to a Mr. Tommy Campbell of Butler, Alabama concerning Smith family genealogy, a photocopy of a letter from Doris to Marjorie and Louis [Bogy?] concerning Smith family genealogy, photocopies of several pages of handwritten genealogical data concerning the Smith family, and a photocopy of two legal papers from Greene County, Alabama 1838), of transactions involving Peter Morrison, perhaps the father of Mary Jane Morrison Smith.
