Publication Requests , 1948
Scope and Contents
The Constituent Services Materials Series contains correspondence between John J. Sparkman and his Alabama constituents about their opinions on national and statewide issues throughout the four decades of his time in Congress, such as the Vietnam War, Thurgood Marshall’s appointment as Supreme Court Justice, Communism, and the space program. It includes requests for Sparkman’s help in securing employment, thanks for his aid, and suggestions about actions Sparkman might take regarding world affairs. The series also contains routine correspondence such as congratulations to and from Sparkman; letters of condolence; and requests from constituents for tickets to football games, copies of congressional publications, tours of the White House, and other matters. The Constituent Services Materials Series also includes project files, with applications, estimates, and plans regarding building and improvement projects taking place throughout Alabama relating to issues such as rural electrification, new airports, buildings, and Tennessee Valley Authority initiatives. These project files are organized alphabetically by the Alabama county in which the proposed project takes place. The Constituent Services Materials Series contains over three hundred linear feet of files regarding the cases of individual constituents who asked Sparkman to help them obtain social security, military benefits, workers’ compensation, and other needs. Other case files address housing issues, immigration and naturalization, and veterans. Case files and some other constituent correspondence may be subject to restrictions, as they contain sensitive and personally identifiable information.
