Legislation: Bill Files, 1937 - 1953
Scope and Contents
The Legislative Records Series contains correspondence between John J. Sparkman, officials, and constituents regarding proposed legislation up for debate in the House or Senate during Sparkman’s four decades in Congress, including material regarding minimum wage, veterans, the Civil Rights Act, and other matters. It also contains bill files, with printed copies of House resolutions and Senate bills put forward at different sessions of Congress between 1937 and 1978. There are bound copies of the twenty-nine-part Pearl Harbor hearings (1946), as well as copies of the Congressional Record. The series also contains committee work files that include background research, proceedings regarding meetings, and other materials related to Sparkman’s time on the congressional committees in which he participated during his tenure, including the House Military Affairs Committee, the Senate Small Business Committee, the Senate Banking Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee, among others. Some of these files contain material pertaining to committee work and legislation about solar power and sustainable energy in the 1970s. The Legislative Records Series may contain speeches Sparkman gave before Congress, though more speeches can be found in the Press and Media Materials Series. The correspondence in Legislative Records may also overlap with correspondence in the Constituent Services Materials and Agency and Department Files Series.
