Biographical / Historical
Martha Graham was born in 1894 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to George Graham and Jane Beers Graham. George Graham was an alienist, and the family was part of high society in Pittsburg. Martha Graham founded her first dance studio in 1926. When she died on April 1, 1991, she was (and still is) considered one of the great pioneers of modern dance. She earned many awards for her contributions to modern dance, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
