M. M. Ord Letters, 1856 January 31
Scope and Contents
Letters to Molly M. Ord of San Fransico, California, one signed "G. E. Ord," the other "Bro. Marcy." One addresses the recipient as "Molly," the other as "Mollie." Annotation identifies "Molly/Mollie" as the wife of Edward Otho Cresap Ord (1818-1883), US Army officer, who was in California at the time these letters were written. The identification may be accurate; Ord married Mary Mercer Thompson, daughter of a prominent San Francisco lawyer, and one of the letters does make reference to "having dined at Judge Thompson's" and "meeting you and Eddy" [presumably E.O.C. Ord], but one of the letters is very clearly addressed to Miss, rather than Mrs., M. M. Ord, casting some doubt on the annotation's accuracy. The letters chiefly discuss family matters; one contains an ink rendering of a woman's face in profile.
