Scope and Contents
Letter from James Harry Deems to Mr. John S. Bios concerning a request for information about Abraham Lincoln's 1864 speech at the Union Relief Association fair. He gives a family history, which has a long tradition of military service, and he states that his father, James Monroe Deems (1828 - 1901), a brigadier general during the Civil War, conducted the band, and he played first violin.
