Luther Norton Letters, Undated, 1915-1923
Scope and Contents
Letters from Luther Norton, written primarily from Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas, to Lottie Irene Hooks Norton, dating from the period of their courtship through their marriage and the births of their children. The letters recount information about family matters, difficult economic times, and provide news of Norton's recreation activities including attending fashion shows, circuses, baseball games, and sight-seeing. Although married during the dates of the majority of the letters, husband and wife lived apart while Lottie cared for the children. Included in the collection is a letter describing a baseball game Norton attended where he witnessed Babe Ruth hit four home runs as well as several letters written from New Orleans, Louisiana, describing Mardi Gras of 1917.
