William and Dorothy Houston Letters and Photograph, 1917 - 1920
Scope and Contents
Letters written by William Penn Houston from Camp Custer in Battle Creek Michigan, and Los Angeles, California, and Dorothy Carroll Houston of Cincinnati, Ohio, and from family and friends over the course of their courtship, marriage, and the birth of their daughter Jane. After courting Dorothy, marrying her, and fathering a daughter, William abruptly left for California, leaving Dorothy with little money. She wrote him three letters rebuking him for his behavior and alluding to an episode that occurred while he was still in Ohio. The chronologically final letter, written by Dorothy's mother Anna Carroll, implies that Dorothy and Jane ultimately joined William in Los Angeles. Also contains a postcard photograph of an unidentified soldier, possibly William Penn Houston.
