Laban E. Lindley Letter, 1865 September 10

Scope and Contents

The collection contains a letter from Laban E. Lindley of the 13th Indiana Cavalry, while stationed in Columbus, Mississippi, to his brother, Milton Lindley, telling him that he may be mustered out of the 13th Indiana Cavalry, but that if he isn't discharged, he may go out to the Plains and fight Indians. He also talks about Columbus being "Old Forest's" headquarters "the most of the time when the rebelion was going on."

The collection also contains photocopies of biographical information about Lindley and the 13th Indiana Cavalry provided by the donor.

Biographical / Historical

Laban E. Lindley was born in August of 1843 in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana, the eleventh child of William Lindley by his second wife, Anna Knight Fisher. By the age of 14, he was employed as a clerk in a drug store. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted as a private in the 13th Indiana Cavalry, but was immediately made Orderly Sergeant, and was later made a Second Lieutenant of his company.

After being honorably discharged in December, 1865, he attended college and begain reading medicine in the office of Dr. J. H. Sherrod. He graduated from the Detroit Medical College in 1871, after which he set up his practice in Paoli. He married Anna C. Frazer on 22 February 1871 and the couple had five children: Maggie, William F., Grace, Nancy, Elizabeth and Laban Jr. He was a member of the Society of Friends while his wife attended the Presbyterian Church.

Lindley died on 10 May 1923, after an illness of a few weeks.
