Latimer N. Dike Diary, 1865

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the 1865 diary of Latimer N. Dike, a cook with the 67th Ohio Regiment. The inside cover of the diary says: “Anyone finding this book will please send to this address: Latimer N. Dike, East-Rockport, Cuyahoga, member of C.G. 67th Regt OVI.”

In his diary, Dike records his basic daily activities, notes the weather and records when he sends or receives letters. Among other daily activities, he notes the meals he had such as biscuits and butter, bread pudding, rice pudding, cracker pudding and corn meal pudding. He states that he heard fighting around Petersburg, Virginia, in late March and in the subsequent days, notes the "wounded coming in." He also records hearing of Lincoln’s death on April 15th.

The diary also includes a memoranda section where he indexes letters sent and received and a cash accounts section where he records purchases, such as a book and pencil.

Biographical / Historical

Corporal Latimer Dike was a member of the 67th Ohio Regiment from Cuyahoga County, Ohio. From January until mid-June 1865, he worked in the cookhouse of the Point of Rocks (Maryland) Hospital. In June, he was assigned to give out knapsacks to discharged men in a Hampton, Virginia, hospital. On August 16, he rejoined his regiment in Richmond, Virginia. On September 12th he was moved to Camp Dennison and was then discharged on September 28th. According to the U.S. Census, he was living in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1870.
