C. Gatchet Recipe Book, 1862 - 1864
Scope and Contents
Recipe book of C. Gatchet, handwritten probably between 1862 and 1864. Includes recipes for foods (icings, custards, soft gingerbread, tomato sauce, etc.), medicines (dropsy, kidney affliction, small pox, cancer, etc.), and household uses (whitewash, soap, fly paper, dying fabrics, scouring fluid, etc.). It also has several poems written upon the deaths of friends and a short account of the military career of Thomas H. Smith until his death in West Point, August 14, 1864.
