Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one diary kept by Vernon Keith Davisson of West Manchester, Preble County, Ohio, while he was on the U.S.S. George A. Johnson during World War II. In the main, the diary relates the various ports of call of the U.S.S. George A. Johnson, DE-583, made in the Mediterranean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The entry on February 20, 1945 describes a surprise attack during a broadcast from the States. The ship was hit by a torpedo that killed 46 and wounded 16. The following day he movingly describes the burial of 49 “buddies.”
