Julius F. Eckart Collection, 1943 - 1945
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of letters written by P.F.C. Julius F. “Julie” Eckart of the 670tj and the 671st Port Company Regiment, Transportation Corps to Violet Earle of Evanston, Cook County, Illinois. Eckart describes his various duties, particularly guard duty, and the weather while stationed in Iran from July 1943 to January 21, 1945. He also describes the sand storms and how varied the temperature can be there. On January 1, 1945, while still in Iran, Eckart proposes marriage to Violet although his subsequent letters never indicate directly that she accepted his proposal. His duties in France included making sure troops and supplies that came into port were sent on to the correct locations. His letter of April 15, 1945 mentions the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt and mourns his loss even though, “I never voted for him.” There are also two pictures of Eckart taken on New Year's Day 1943 at Camp Scott, South Carolina, and a bulletin.
