During the summer months of 1943, Francis was hospitalized at the U.S. Naval Hospital on Long Island for a hernia. While in recovery, Francis received letters from his siblings, parents, grandparents, and a friend about day-to-day business at home. During 1944, a majority of the letters are from his mother, particularly those between January and February, during which time the family lost contact with Francis for approximately three months.
