Matthias Crumb and Margaret Vest Legal Documents, 1801, 1807
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of two legal documents. The first, dated September 16, 1801, states that Matthias Crumb, then about to marry a widow, Margaret Eastridge, is to sell some of his property to Abigail Swearingen to establish an estate that will provide for the future maintenance of his new wife and her heirs. The sale included an enslaved person named Bobb, about eighteen years old; as well as "four head of horses, and two feather beds." This document was witnessed by Worden Pope and Alex Pope. The document states that Swearingen was a resident of Jefferson County, Kentucky. The second document appears on the obverse and consists of a receipt dated February 25, 1807, acknowledging payment by Abigail Swearingen of $226.50 to Margaret Vest for, among other things, "hire of the within mentioned negro up to the 20th of November last," and interest on the sale of the "within mentioned horses." Vest, who signed with an "x," added via her scribe that she and William Vest "have parted and live separately." This document was witnessed by Worden Pope and Levi Tyler.
