Writings, 1891-2008

 Series
Identifier: 3

Scope and Contents

The Writings Series contains short stories, columns, manuscripts, hymns, and galley proofs of My GI Aching Back (1946), as well as decades’ worth of handwritten and typed poems by Ralph Hammond. Many of the poems were used in Hammond’s published books, including One Golden Apple A Day (1982), Collected Poems (1983), Wisdom Is: Refining Wisdom (1984), Edging through the Grass (1985), and A Golden Harvest of Poems (2008). The series contains research materials, negatives, correspondence, clippings, and photographs related to sites Hammond visited in preparation for his 1951 book Antebellum Mansions of Alabama; along with thirty-four matted display photographs of mansions, a number of mansion floor plans by Edwin B. Lancaster of the American Institute of Architects, and a pickle spoon owned by Alabama World War I General Robert Lee Bullard. There are also files of correspondence, reviews, photocopies of selected material, and permissions documents pertaining to the writers who were included in Alabama Poets: an Anthology (1990), which Hammond edited. The bulk of the editing took place in 1988-1989.
