Scope and Contents

The Personal Materials Series contains items Ralph Hammond collected during and about World War II, including a journal he kept in 1942 while stationed in Europe; some photographs; correspondence between Hammond and his friends and relatives; issues of Army newspaper “The Stars and Stripes"; and several files of clippings documenting major anniversaries of World War II battles--such as the fiftieth anniversary of D-Day--and interviews with Alabama World War II veterans. The series also contains general documents and memorabilia, such as biographical materials about Ralph Hammond; several books owned by Ralph or Myra Hammond; and newspaper clippings about art, Alabama writers, coach Paul Bryant, William Faulkner, and Nelle Harper Lee. There is one file of correspondence between Lee and Ralph Hammond, mostly consisting of transcriptions or copies Hammond later made of the originals.
