Scope and Contents

From the Series: The Personal and Professional Materials Series consists of genealogical and biographical information about Hudson Strode and the family of his wife, Therese Cory Strode. Also included are certificates, programs, items relating to his memoirs, legal documents, research materials, newspapers, booklets, and memorabilia. Newspaper clippings here cover Strode's professorship, plays, lectures, travels, the publication and reviews of his books, and his retirement and death. The series also contains clippings, reviews, speeches and lectures pertaining to Strode's time as a professor at The University of Alabama. Also in the series are items concerning students who went on to become successful writers, including Borden Deal, Lonnie Coleman, Alice Fellows, Harriet Hassell, Helen Norris, Elise Sanguinetti, and Carlyle Tillery. The Personal and Professional Series includes scrapbooks, artfacts, and artwork collected by Strode. Among the artifacts are some personal effects, such as a pipe, cigarette case, cufflinks, and leather glasses case that may have belonged to Norwegian novelist Sigrid Undset, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. Other artifacts found here include religious items, souvenir spoons, leather portfolios, a Confederate flag, and some Confederate currency. “Columbus Breaking the Egg,” a 1753 etching by English printmaker William Hogarth, is among the artwork collected here.
