Scope and Contents

The Correspondence Series includes letters between Strode and a number of notable literary and political figures, including Aldous Huxley, Ernest Hemingway, H. G. Wells, Pearl S. Buck, Gertrude Stein, Thornton Wilder, Alfred A. Knopf, Margaret Mitchell, Carl Sandburg, Grace Kelly, Dwight Eisenhower, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, George Wallace, Edward, Duke of Windsor, Thomas Merton, Nelle Harper Lee, and Virginia Woolf. Frequent correspondents include Alabama senator Lister Hill; American spiritual teacher Joel Goldsmith; members of the publishing house Harcourt Brace; Nancy Astor (widely known as “Lady Astor”), the first woman to sit on the English House of Commons; Count Lennart Bernadotte, grandson of King Gustaf V of Sweden; Norwegian novelist Sigrid Undset, winner of the 1928 Nobel Prize for Literature; Danish author Josiah Bille; and Danish author Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), author of Out of Africa. Strode also corresponded with many of his former students, and with individuals important in the history of The University of Alabama, including H. M. Comer, W. S. Hoole, David Matthews, A. B. Moore, Gordon Palmer, Martin ten Hoor, and Frank Rose. The series contains a large portion of Therese Strode’s correspondence, as well.

From the Collection: Materials are primarily in English. Some correspondence and printed material in Spanish, German, Norwegian, Finnish, and Swedish.

Portions of the collection are open for research. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using this collection. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations. 

Access to and use of materials that were created by Nelle Harper Lee in this collection require written permission from the Lee estate. Patrons may not use cell phone cameras or any other recording devices when accessing restricted portions of this collection. Arrangement

The Correspondence Series is arranged into two subseries, General Correspondence and Therese Strode Correspondence. Incoming correspondence--sent from others to Hudson and Therese Strode--is arranged alphabetically by correspondent’s last name. Copies of outgoing correspondence--sent from Hudson and Therese Strode to others--are arranged chronologically.
