Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Over seven thousand photographs and negatives that document the life of Walter B. Jones. The collection includes personal and family photographs, as well as photographs taken in association with Jones' professional endeavors as state geologist of Alabama. The collection chronicles his academic career as a student and professor at The University of Alabama, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He took photographs during his military service during World War I as a member of the American Expeditionary Force and during World War II when he was stationed in New Guinea. Many images depict his work as a geologist in Mexico and Alabama. Additional subject matter include oil fields, duck hunting, fishing, landscapes, and geological formations.
