Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This collection contains two account books and one commonplace book compiled by Henry Tutwiler.

The slim, black-and-green account book records the tuition payments and expenditures of students at Greensboro Academy in Hale County, Alabama. Entries are recorded from October 1868 to July 1869, a period when Henry Tutwiler's daughter, Julia Strudwick Tutwiler, served as the school's principal.

A 200-page yellow account book records Henry Tutwiler's personal expenditures in entries dated from 1865 to 1873. Notable entries include payments to three women identified as doctors who may have been faculty members at Greensboro Academy: Nora Nugent, Annie Lamb, and Ann Feeney.

The large brown commonplace book includes quotations and reviews of a wide range of scientific, technical, and educational texts. After weather entries for July 1862, Tutwiler abbreviated the weather entries and added very brief war-related entries beginning in May 1864. The back of the book contains detailed weather charts.
