Scope and Contents
The collection contains correspondence, speeches, and essays written by and to Richard Holmes Powell of Union Springs, Alabama. Some letters were written from Chunnenuggee, Alabama. With only a few exceptions, the letters were written before the Civil War and deal primarily with news of family and friends. The essays and speeches are on many subjects, including the death of Andrew Jackson, small colleges, the influence of steam over civilization, and the management of slaves.
