Scope and Contents
James William Oakley Jr. took these photographs during the week that Autherine Lucy, the first African American student at The University of Alabama, enrolled in February 1956. Photos do not show Lucy. Photos instead focus on crowds that gathered on campus an in downtown Tuscaloosa in protest of her enrollment. Oakley was a student at the University at the time.
