Scope and Contents

From the Collection: Collection consists of forty-nine photographs of William Crawford Gorgas (1854 - 1920) family, son of Josiah and Amelia Gayle Gorgas. Collection includes formal portraits of William Crawford Gorgas from infancy to adulthood, wife Marie, daughter Aileen and her children, Amelia Gayle Gorgas, friends of the Gorgas family, and interior and exterior scenes of the Gorgas homes in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Cuba and Panama. Collection also includes a portrait photograph entitled, "Hood's Children" that depicts the orphaned children of Confederate General John Bell Hood. Photograph was sold under the auspices of the Hood Relief Committee, New Orleans. Proceeds of the sale benefited the Permanent Fund for the Education and Maintenance of the "Wards of the South".
