Letters to Margaret
Scope and Contents
There are three letters addressed to Margaret. The earliest one was written in 1942 and is from a friend Isabelle Burke. In it, Isabelle bemoans the fact that she is so busy she hasn't been able to "study harmony or practice the piano or keep up with my correspondence." She asks Margaret what she has been doing musically and promises to start a schedule of practicing two hours a day.
The other two letters are from Mama Emmie written in Summerville, South Carolina, in the late spring of 1945. Mama Emmie is apparently the mother of the young man Margaret is dating or has maybe already married. Emmie says, "You will never know what it means to me and I mean, what I mean[s] to know my son is associated with such a sweet girl." She goes on to say "Now dear feel sure that we will be very very glad to have you come. You will find us very ordinary folk. With just humble surroundings" which implies that Margaret has not yet met Mama Emmie. In the second letter Emmie thanks Margaret for sending clothes for "the little people", presumably the younger members of the family. Emmie says, "They have had all the kids and grown ups in to see what Margaret sent from way out in California."
