Biographical / Historical
Victoria Meta Strauss, youngest daughter of Alfred and Annie Strauss, was born in Alabama, on April 14, 1919. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of arts degree in education in 1940. After graduation she taught school and married a young man from Alabama who was a fighter pilot in the U. S. Army Air Force. He was killed in an accident in Australia in 1942. After his death, she enlisted in the Navy and was later selected for officer's training school. At the end of the war, she left the Navy but was recalled to active duty in 1950 during the Korean conflict. She stayed in the Navy, stationed in London, England, serving as the librarian for scientific papers until her retirement as a Lt. Commander. While in London, she remarried; her married name was Victoria Strauss Hewitson. Victoria later moved back to the United States and lived in Gulfport and St. Petersburg, Florida. She died in 2010.
