This collection contains two letters written to members of the Shannon family. The first is written by Howard P. Ruff, Sergeant First Class, United States Navy, during World War II, to Reverend R. A. Shannon. The letter is written on stationery from the U.S. Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Twenty-nine Palms, California, post-marked from Port Hueneme, California, and addressed to Dubuque, Iowa. The letter discusses an unidentified quarrel between the two men, naval discipline, and general daily activities of life as an enlisted man as well as civilian life during World War II.
The second letter is written by John (J.C.) to his Aunt Leone Shannon. The letter was written from Oahu, Hawaii, to Dubuque, Iowa, during World War II. John discusses general news of his daily activities, responds to Leones reports on family members and news from home, and discusses the lack of celebration on V. E. (Victory in Europe) Day.
