Scope and Contents

From the Collection: Correspondence, speeches, press releases, biographical notes, campaign literature, photographs, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Material for the early period of Heflin's career (1893-1900), when he was engaged in local and state politics, is scarce. The scrapbooks, consisting mostly of newspaper clippings, illustrate all phases of his activities from 1895-1938. The speeches reflect his attitude on domestic and foreign issues such as segregation, immigration, tariff, rural free delivery, women's suffrage, the League of Nations, the presidential campaign of 1928, and Roman Catholicism. The correspondence is arranged in four groups: political; general; personal affairs; and outgoing letters. Letters within each group are organized by date. Heflin's correspondents included John H. Bankhead, Alben Barkley, William Jennings Bryan, John Nance Garner, Bibb Graves, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Carl Vinson and Woodrow Wilson.
