This collection consists of a two-page handwritten letter dated May 2, 1794, from Deputy Governor Samuel J. Potter to Samuel Helme at Tower Hill (South Kingstown), Rhode Island. The letter is a direct response to a complaint received by Helme from a local woman who had been physically assaulted by Potter’s brother. According to the letter, the woman had allegedly trespassed on Potter’s brother’s property and subjected him to verbal abuse, prompting him to strike her with a birch rod....
