This collection contains a letter from John M. White to "the President or Presiding Office of the United States Military Academy" at West Point, New York. Written in 1849 from Uchee, Alabama, it describes Gabriel de Korponay, an experienced military officer of Hungarian descent, in derogatory terms. White, a University of Georgia graduate who ran a boy's school in rural Alabama, was likely writing to check the references that Korpornay offered to prove he was qualified to teach horsemanship....

This collection consists of a single, full-length portrait photograph of an African American infantry lieutenant in U.S. Army service uniform, taken circa 1930. The officer is posed formally, wearing a Sam Browne belt, M1902 saber, and riding boots with spurs. This collection consists of a four-page handwritten letter from Cadet Thomas B. Hall to his cousin, Miss Marie L. Elmore, dated September 29, 1861, and sent from Camp Beauregard at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The letter is enclosed in a stampless postal cover addressed to Montgomery, Alabama, care of Col. John A. Elmore.
