Portions of the logs for the C.S.S. Alabama and the C.S.S. Tuscaloosa. The logs document the daily weather, longitude and latitude as well as information about engagements with enemy ships. There is also a list of ships captured by the Alabama from 5 September 1862 to 20 June 1863 and copies of the correspondence between Lieutenant John Low as captain of the C.S.S. Tuscaloosa and various authorities of the British colony of the Cape of Good Hope.

Vinton, Assistant Quartermaster in New York, to Lieutenant Josiah Gorgas at Watervliet Arsenal, refusing to grant Gorgas’s request for supplies to be sent to Pensacola, and from University of Alabama cadet John H. Marshall in Tuscaloosa, discussing the possible role of the cadets in the defense of the state, the fainting of several cadets during a dress parade, and inquires about his family.

Typescript of Curtis R. Burke's Civil War journal which includes daily entries from October 1862 to June 1865. Notable journal entries include descriptions of John Hunt Morgan's raid into Ohio in July 1863, and accounts of conditions in prison camps in Indiana and Illinois.

Hundley's diary covers the years 1861-64. The entries discuss secession and preparations for war, wartime service, private thoughts, news from home, and other matters.

Two letters written from Aransas Pass, Texas, to a Mrs. Brown in October 1914, containing extensive reminiscences of the Warrior Guards (Company A of the Fifth Alabama Infantry Regiment) and Fowler's Artillery Battery. Both units were organized at Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The record group contains many early extant records of The University of Alabama and includes materials documenting a wide range of functions, persons, and aspects of the University.

Papers of both Edward Bressie Vaughan, Sr. and Jr. The majority of the papers are requisitions, receipts, Quartermaster stores, etc. from August through Novemeber 1862 during the Kentucky Campaign signed by or sent to Lieutenant Edward Bressie Vaughan, Jr.. Other papers include both Vaughan, Sr.'s and Jr.'s personal and business correspondence from 1832 through 1869. The collection also contains E.B. Vaughan, Sr.'s Oath of Allegiance (dated 30 June 1865) to the United Stated.

Letters between Union soldier George Woodard, Company D, Eighth Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, and his fiancee Gene Smith, of Burnett, Wisconsin. Woodard served at the battle of Corinth and the Vicksburg Campaign. He died at a Memphis hospital in 1864.
