This manuscript is an earlier version of a sociology textbook by Lee Bidgood and E. W. Gregory, Jr. titled American Society: An Introduction to Sociology. The manuscript is divided into 4 parts which are as follows: Part I The Society as a Whole, Part II The Types of Population, Part II Country, Town and City, and Part IV The Abnormal Classes.

Joseph E. Brown letters

Scope and Contents From the Collection: This collection contains twenty-five letters from Brown, most of them to his friend and business associate General Ira R. Foster, Quartermaster General of the State of Georgia during the Civil War. It also contains copies of two letters from Brown to Georgia politician Howell Cobb, and one from Cobb to Brown, regarding appointing Foster as a special railway postal agent for north Georgia and north Alabama. The bulk of the collection predates the Civil War.

The letters are dated September 19, 20, 21, October 3, 9, November 7, December 10, 1979, and January 25, February 15, 25, March 7, 31, May 13, June 10, 1980.
