Biographical / Historical
The 2nd Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters was formed in the summer of 1862 from re-enlisted men drawn from various units of the Confederate Army. The battalion became part of General J.K. Jackson’s brigade in the Army of Tennessee. Although it was a Georgia unit, many of the soldiers in Company E were from Montgomery, Alabama. They were commanded by Major J.J. Cox and Captain Samuel D. Oliver and fought at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. Later, they were incorporated into Company K of the 58th Alabama Infantry and served under General “States Rights” Gist during the Battle of Atlanta and under General John Bell Hood during his campaign to disrupt Union supply lines in Tennessee.
