Scope and Contents
This collection contains a single handwritten letter dated May 10, 1843, from Rowland G. Hazard (signed “R.G.H.”) to his brother Isaac P. Hazard of Peace Dale, Rhode Island. The letter was mailed from Mobile, Alabama, and arrived folded into its own envelope. The postmark reads “MOBILE 11, Ala.” A notation on the verso references the sender traveling by steamer from New Orleans to Mobile and discusses a commission from a relative, Ed Hazard, which had not yet been read. The contents suggest family and business matters relevant to the Hazard family’s commercial interests during their period of economic activity in the South.

Biographical / Historical
The Hazard family of Rhode Island was a prominent New England industrial and mercantile family in the nineteenth century, centered in Peace Dale, Washington County. Rowland G. Hazard (1801–1888) was a manufacturer, reformer, and philosopher known for his involvement in the family’s textile business as well as for his opposition to slavery and support of free labor ideologies. He traveled extensively in the Southern United States, often on family business. Isaac P. Hazard (1794–1879), his elder brother, was also involved in the family’s manufacturing operations in Peace Dale. This letter reflects the Hazards' commercial presence and correspondence networks across regional lines, particularly between New England and the Gulf South.
