Biographical / Historical

J.E. Armstrong was a Methodist minister active in Virginia during the years preceding the Civil War. His June 1860 correspondence with Rev. John S. Martin of Baltimore, Maryland, reflects the profound tensions within the Methodist Church, which mirrored the national divide over slavery. In the antebellum period, the Methodist denomination, like many Protestant groups, experienced bitter sectional conflict between abolitionist and pro-slavery factions, leading to schisms that prefigured the wider national crisis.
