Scope and Contents
This broadside, signed by the Governor of Alabama at the time, expresses an "increased and strengthened confidence in the fitness of Andrew Jackson for the office of President," urging his re-election. It is also signed in print by the Alabama Speaker of the House of Representatives, James Penn, and the President of the Alabama Senate, Samuel B. Moore.
Especially pleasing to Alabama was Jackson's veto of he Maysville Road Bill, on the grounds that the Constitution did not authorize federal spending on internal improvements wihin a state (in this case, Kentucky). The veto was a victory for "strict constructionists," i.e. those who believed that the powers of the federal government ought to be confined within strict limits; and certainly must never overshadow the reserved rights of the States.

Biographical / Historical
Gabriel Moore (1785–1845) was an American politician who served as the fifth Governor of Alabama from 1829 to 1831. A staunch supporter of Andrew Jackson, Moore played a significant role in reinforcing Jacksonian principles within Alabama, particularly advocating for states’ rights and limited federal government. During his tenure as governor, Moore endorsed Jackson’s veto of the Maysville Road Bill, which rejected federal funding for a Kentucky infrastructure project on constitutional grounds. His administration aligned closely with the broader Democratic movement that sought to curb federal overreach and maintain state sovereignty. Prior to his governorship, Moore served in the Alabama Legislature and later represented the state in the U.S. Senate. His political career reflected the tensions of the Jacksonian era, navigating issues of federal power, economic policy, and regional interests in the rapidly expanding American republic.
