Scope and Contents

A publication written by James Callaway addressed to white Southerners, warning that the suffrage movement was a "Trojan Horse" for racial equality. It documents the friendship and alliance between Susan B. Anthony and her successor Carrie Chapman Catt with Fredrick Douglass and other African American leaders. Callaway's pamphlet sought to undermine the legitimacy of suffragists by attacking their personal and professional relationships, including their associations with other women activists.

Biographical / Historical

James Callaway was an American writer and public figure known for his opposition to the women's suffrage movement in the late nineteentth and early twentieth centuries. Callaway's rhetoric reflected the sentiment of a significant portion of the United States' population during the suffrage debate. Writings like his were widely spread during this period due to the fear of possible "consequences" that could arise from giving women the right to vote.
