Biographical / Historical
Talladega College, located in Talladega, Alabama, is the state's oldest private historically Black college. Founded in 1865 by formerly enslaved men William Savery and Thomas Tarrant, the institution was established to provide education and opportunity for African Americans in the post-Civil War South.
The college's origins trace back to a Freedmen’s Bureau convention in 1866, where Savery and Tarrant, along with fellow community member Ambrose Headen, committed to establishing a school for the children of freed people. Their efforts led to the construction of a one-room schoolhouse, which quickly outgrew its capacity. In 1867, with support from the Freedmen’s Bureau and the American Missionary Association, the institution acquired the Coosa River Valley Baptist Academy, a pre-Civil War structure built using enslaved labor. This building, later named Swayne Hall, became the foundation of what would officially be chartered as Talladega College in 1869.
By the early twentieth century, Talladega College had expanded its curriculum, offering programs in theology, teacher training, music, and nursing, alongside a traditional liberal arts education.
